Understanding The Video Production Cycle

Shane Yeager
Video content has proven that it is a sound investment for any business. But, say you're a new business looking to get into the content creating world, where do you begin? The first step to approaching marketable video is to understand the process.

There are three phases of video production:

1. Pre-Production

Pre-production starts at script development. As the name suggests, pre-production involves anything before filming begins. This includes:

Research

Script writing

Storyboards

Prop and wardrobe preparation

Casting

Hiring the crew

Scouting and locking locations

Post production preparation

In this stage, all the coordination is based on the script. The script is your first point of reference and, paired with the storyboard, the most important stage in creating your vision. The pre-production phase is when you prepare everything for the days you will be on set. It is pivotal in dictating how the rest of the process will unfold.

2. Production

Production is when the team gets cameras rolling. During production, video producers are meticulous at organizing the set and staying on track with the schedule. It is during production that a video production company’s creativity comes in play. Production can take a lot of time, effort and energy but it's all worth it capture the perfect shot. On shoot dates, you will follow the script developed in the pre-production phase.

3. Post-Production

Post-production might just be the most trying part of the production cycle. This is where the editing magic comes into play. Everything including graphics, music, sound effects, and visual are crafted and designed in a way that fits the script. In this stage, the production team assembles the necessary material to produce a high-quality video.
